Why unwrap a protected link at all?
To see where it actually goes before clicking. The wrapper hides the destination host, which is precisely the detail you need when judging whether a message is a phishing attempt.
Does unwrapping remove the protection?
It only reveals the target — it does not disable scanning for anyone else. Visiting the unwrapped address does bypass the gateway's click-time check, so read the host carefully first.
