About the numeronym generator
Turns long words into numeronyms by keeping the first and last letter and replacing the middle with its letter count — the convention that gives us i18n, l10n, a11y and k8s. Applies to a whole phrase at once with a configurable minimum length.
Frequently asked questions
Why is accessibility written a11y?
A, then the eleven letters between, then y. The same rule gives internationalization as i18n and Kubernetes as k8s. They began as a way to shorten mailing list subject lines.
Should I use them in documentation?
Expand on first use, then abbreviate. A11y and i18n are opaque to newcomers, and accessibility documentation in particular reads badly when it excludes people at the first word.
