Validates an IBAN by the mod-97 checksum defined in ISO 13616 and checks the length against the registry for its country, then breaks the number into its country code, check digits and BBAN.
Frequently asked questions
Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?
No. The checksum only proves the number is well formed and free of typos. Whether the account is open, and whose it is, only the bank can confirm.
Why are IBAN lengths different per country?
Each country kept its existing domestic account format inside the IBAN, so the BBAN portion varies. Norway uses 15 characters in total; Malta uses 31.
